A Dinner in the (Museum) Diner

It was a pleasure to welcome Jo Roebuck-Pearson, Bill Walsh and their guests into the “Museum dining car” on July 24th for an special evening – an evening of champagne,  fine wines, and an authentic five-course meal featuring actual railroad dining service cuisine  as researched and skillfully presented by hostess and Museum board member Marcia Mitchell.

The courses you ask?

Cream of Peanut Soup, Crab Imperial, Pennsylvania Salad, Escallops of Veal Piquante, and a delicious slice of Cantaloupe Pie… and five fine wines from our partners at Prairie Berry Winery.

Thank you! We count ourselves fortunate to count Bill and Jo as friends and supporters of the Museum.

It has been a memorable Memorial Day here at the Museum. On this day, we honor all of our Nation’s veterans and others that have served this country and touched our lives including family members, friends, and railroaders. While shooting the image of the Museum’s newest HO locomotive on the layout Kelly Christofferson and her daughters Dalaney and Sedona stopped by to visit. In visiting with Kelly, she told me that her granddad Charles Easley had worked for the CB&Q and later the BN out of Galesburg, Illinois, for many years before his retirement. Our Burlington items and other childhood recollections of him brought Kelly to tears – what fond memories!

Also, the new HO scale locomotive, the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern # 6359, the Mount Rushmore, is shown on the layout. As of May 31st, the real #6359 will remain a part of the Canadian Pacific Railway but the west end of the former DM&E in South Dakota will become the new Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad – a new era in South Dakota railroading begins… more memories for us.

Thanks to John Kilbride for locating this collectible HO model for us in New Jersey, and for its donation by Jack Stengel.

Membership and Yearly Giving Vital for Museum Activities and Operations

I am so pleased with the accomplishments of this past year here at the Museum. The new year of 2014 presents the SDSRM with new opportunities and a continued progression in the education and enrichment of members and visitors alike.

The South Dakota State Railroad Museum provides a venue that gives us the opportunity to preserve, promote, and experience South Dakota’s unique railroad legacy. The Museum is the primary advocate and physical home for our state’s railroading history, education, culture, and offers a window to its dynamic future.

Your membership support right now is critical in planning for our new 2014 exhibits and operations. 2014 will also mark the debut of the SDSRM’s Railroad Activity Guide (Grades K, 4, 7, & 11) in South Dakota’s schools and on our web site.

Of course, to achieve that we need your support in membership.

Museum membership comes with unique benefits. In addition to free admission all year long, members at the basic levels can enjoy our in-Museum programs, special events, and email updates. Please review the membership levels on the Museum membership page of the Museum’s web site at www.sdsrm.org.

To many of you the end of the year is also a time when you decide which organizations you will support. I humbly ask that you consider adding us to your list when you or your business make a year-end, tax-deductible gift.

Your participation is key. Please consider sending in your 2014 payment as soon as possible. I thank you in advance for your participation, and thank you for your consideration.

My best wishes to you and yours for the coming year!

Rick Mills, Museum Director

Thanks to funding from the Tracy Dobbs memorial and the generosity of individual members including the family of Bernard Carey, the Museum’s depot section is becoming a favorite for our visitors. Here, Bernard’s daughter Sharon visits her Dad’s former Rock Island depot desk, and taps out a little “dot and dash” on the operating telegraph. Yes, it makes us smile, too!

The family of Tracy Dobbs visited the Museum on May 26th, and had a great time! The Dobbs Memorial Fund has allowed much to be completed in the Dakota Junction Learning Layout and in the Depot Days display area – not to mention providing funds for interpretive signage throughout the Museum. Thanks to you all – I believe TD would approve.

135 Boy Scouts, Leaders, and family members from Troup 444 in Littleton, Colorado toured the Museum on May 26th – what a fun and well behaved group of young men! We hope you all enjoyed your time here.

Noted South Dakota artist Ronald Backer (and SDSRM member – Thank You Ron!) is offering a unique and one-of-a-kind way for you to support the Museum. Mr. Backer has created this 24″x30″ original oil of South Dakota’s famous Hisega Lodge – served from 1908 to 1948 by the storied “Crouch Line” – the Rapid City, Black Hills and Western Railroad.

SOLD! Thank you for your interest!

Please contact Rick at the Museum for more information.
