You just never know what might show up on the rails as evidenced by this Belle Fourche-bound Canadian Pacific train at Black Hawk, South Dakota on August 18th. It is none other than a former Soo Line SD60 leading, but these are rare out on the west end of the former DM&E route.
And, I had not even planned on any rail photography that day! Flooding on the Missouri River is creating operational challenges for the railroads of the region – including the Union Pacific. To raise their former C&NW transcon line at Missouri Valley, Iowa, by at least three feet, the UP is hauling rock and ballast from the Everist pits at Dell Rapids and Hawarden by the trainload 24/7. Turnaround times and motive power shortages on the D&I line are also dictating the use of UP power on some trains. A set of UP power leads a northbound empty over the Minnehaha Falls in downtown Sioux Falls toward Dell Rapids on June 9.
Thanks to Mike Mancuso of Sioux Falls for this nice view. A 57-car Canadian Pacific train from Belle Fourche to Rapid City is kicking up some of the new powder just north of St. Onge on Monday, March 7th. Windchill? – Well, let just say the air temp was 7 above with about a 25mph breeze from the southeast…
A cold and breezy day in Alliance, Nebraska. But of course not too cold to shoot train photos! On my way back from eastern South Dakota and Nebraska last week I happened on a set of retired GE C30-7 locomotives on a side track in Alliance – can it be that it has been over a decade since I last saw one of these units pulling tonnage on the Black Hills Subdivision?
